Camp Theme for 2010
CIRCUS
Dear Prospective Counselor,
Thank you for your interest in counselor and volunteer opportunities at the Central Virginia Burn Camp. This will be our 17th year of camp and each year would not have been as fun and successful as it was without the hard work and dedication of our staff. We are a not for profit camp and the children come free of charge. Our campers are 7-17 year olds who have sustained burn injuries. The camp offers the chance for these children to enjoy fun summer activities with others who have gone through a similar experience as they have. The camp’s positive, supportive environment helps foster a sense of self-confidence and boosts self-esteem.
The camp is staffed and run entirely by volunteers from throughout Virginia and surrounding states. We are financially supported by Professional Firefighters throughout the State, Aluminum Cans for Burn Children, The Virginia Chapter of the American Fire Sprinkler Association, Old Dominion Professional Firefighters, and by other associated friends and supporters.
This year camp is June 13th – 19th, with orientation beginning on Saturday the 12th at noon for counselors. The campers will arrive Sunday afternoon. Counselor orientation is mandatory for all counselors. Our theme for this year is “The Circus”.
We are looking for counselors who will be able to spend the entire week of camp with us. Volunteer opportunities also exist for people to help with specific short-term activities.
The counselor is responsible for campers’ well - being and safety, participating with him or her in activities and meals, and helping with the upkeep of the cabin. Counselor to camper ratio is generally 1: 2. The counselor will also assist, as necessary, with the camper’s rehabilitation and medical needs, along with the camp’s directors and staff. All camp activities are run by our own staff and counselors, so on your application, please list any camp activities that you would be willing to help out with.
Our counselors generally are therapists, nurses, other health care professionals, firefighters, university and college students, adult burn survivors and other interested adults. Counselors must be at least 20 year’s old. Junior counselors may be 18-20 year’s old.
Camp activities include swimming, fishing, canoeing, horseback riding, sports, arts and crafts, a ropes challenge course, nature and educational programs, off- camp adventures, and evening programs, including movies, dances, singing, camp fires and variety shows. All meals are cooked and served by state and local firefighters. We sleep in comfortable, air-conditioned cabins.
Please send back your completed application by April 15th so we can start the interview process and plan our staff accordingly. We must also have the criminal history form filled out, notarized, and sent back to us in order to process your application. WE WILL PAY THE PROCESSING FEE. Please let us know if you have any thoughts or questions.
Thank you, and we hope to see you in June.
