HIGHLIGHTS
FROM CAMP 2005 Oh what a day, we came to play, were all here at
Burn Camp in Central VA. The
food is good, the games are fun, the firefighters in Virginia are number
ONE ! . (submitted by Jessica Cramer) Air, Space, Rockets
Oh My! From near and far friends gathered for another fun week at
camp. Despite the pool difficulties, once again camp was amazing! From the
counselor team building and training to the rocket crafts and
launches to slip-n-slide and carnival. Our week was fun-filled with
our theme being "Air and Space." Who would have thought that
summer camp would have involved HOMEWORK? Each day the kids were
challenged with the daily quiz. They were given questions for the day and
books to look up answers about planets and space. Answer clues were also
hidden around camp. We spent the
majority of Monday doing team building and ropes course. From rock
climbing to Zipline to balancing wires to gigantic teeter toters, we
learned how to depend on each other for support and encouragement. Monday
evening we gathered at the
Observatory at University of Virginia to learn more about space and view
Jupiter and its moons. On Wednesday, our big adventure began with a trip
to D.C. to the Air and Space Museum and then we went to the water
park and splashed around and concluded with dinner with the Prince
Williams County Firefighters. This trip would not
have been possible without the generous
financial support of Curtis and Renee Stilwell and ACBC.
Also, many thanks to Jeff Schnebelen and the Prince William
firefighters who helped to host this wonderful day. The
rest of the week we spent horseback riding, canoeing, fishing, hiking,
archery, camp olympics and swimming at a local pool. We even
learned a little swing dancing. Thanks to all those
that made this week such a great time. Thank you to the
firefighters that came and cooked for us. Who said camp food wasn't good
definitely wasn't part of CVBC. We had Thanksgiving Dinner, Lasagna,
Spaghetti, Clams & Shrimp, Pancakes, French toast, and who could for-
get the gutter banana splits. They sure were a hit. We
also were fortunate to have adult burn survivor Dave Borowski share his
new book, On a Ring and a Prayer, his life story with the campers
and staff. All the staff and campers were privileged to receive a signed
copy of the book from Dave and his wife and co-author Kerri Cadden, thanks
to the generous financial assistance of ACBC and the Henrico Professional
Firefighters. A GREAT BIG thanks
to Mason for organizing meals...to Ricky and Jungle Bob for helping
run the "behind the scenes" work. To Tim and Leslie, thank you
for continuing to keep camp alive for another year. To Kim and Bill, thank
you for organizing events, schedules and helping keep things running as
smoothly as possible. To each counselor who drove near, who drove far - it
was great seeing and meeting everyone. This was by far the best counselor
teamwork I've seen. See you in 2006! We hope that all you campers are doing
well in school. We are so glad that you spent a week of your summer with
us. Thanks for all of your
energy and for making camp so much fun To all our counselors, staff,
friends and supporters, camp would not be possible if it were not for you
all! Thanks for the role each
of you play. Enjoy this picture DVD from Summer of 2005! We are already planning for camp next
year. See you in 6 months, June 18 24, 2006! Love, Leslie, Tim
